The Best Path to Become a Lobbyist

Question:

What is the best path to take to becoming a lobbyist? I've always dreamed of becoming one. Please advise.

Answer:

I'm glad to hear you are interested in becoming a lobbyist. I was a state and federal lobbyist for many years and loved it! Dr. Billet, who runs the GSPM Legislative Program was a registered lobbyist as well. We both worked on Capitol Hill before becoming lobbyists. I know people will tell you don't have to work on the Hill to become a lobbyist, but it is really a good idea. You can also gain great "insider" information by working in a Statehouse, a City Council, a prominent federal government organization or the like. You want to gain as much experience/information that you can so that you'll be invaluable to a lobbying organization, trade association or consulting firm that hires lobbyists/government relations professionals. In your class work, try to learn as much as you possibly can about the legislative process. Work as an intern on the Hill if you don't have any legislative experience. Try working your way up the ladder in various Hill positions. It takes time to become a lobbyist. The more you're able to offer a potential employer in the way of expertise on a particular issue/issues and knowledge/experience in the legislative world - the more likely they are to hire you.

Professor Arterton and I developed this online political career mini-book which addresses various careers within the legislative world. You can also check out organizations of lobbyists such as the American League of Lobbyists, Women in Government Relations, etc. Also, it would be smart to request some informational interviews with lobbyists who work in fields of interest to you. Contact our GSPM Alumni Office to get the names of some alums who are registered lobbyists. Good luck and keep me posted.
