"Job Hopping"

QUESTION:

My dad told me if I changed jobs too many times I would be considered to be a "job hopper" and that employers won't hire me. Is that true?

ANSWER:

Your dad is mostly correct. Early in your career - you are given a little more latitude in your ability to change jobs a little more frequently. But later on -- frequent job changes are considered to be some cause for concern by employers. You just have to be prepared to discuss what it is you have changed jobs. So, if you can show a series of upward progression and show employers you needed to "move out to move up" -- most will understand that. On theother hand, if you switch jobs "just because" -- you won't be viewed so favorably by potential employers. The rules have changed a little bit sincethe economy is pretty flat. Many employers will understand the need to change jobs if an organization simply goes out of business or loses a lot of business. I'd bet your dad has your best interests at heart. It would be helpful to talk to him about his experience and the other folks you know. There's no need to try to figure this stuff out by yourself. Good luck and if you want to schedule some time to talk to me, feel free to send me an email and let me know.
