1. Mitt Romney has wrapped up the race for the GOP 2012 nomination by proving to his party that he can win sufficient numbers of votes among populations such as Iowa and New Hampshire to make a legitimate run against President Obama. He has survived the attacks and bested all his rivals.
2. Newt Gingrich has blown up the last remaining bridge on which social conservatives could meet, coalesce behind an anti-Romney candidate, and march into South Carolina to wage a last-stand campaign. The makings of a potent, vote-attracting populist critique of Romney exist in Romney's record at Bain and as Governor of Massachusetts. But the message that Romeny is heartless and not a true conservative has been damaged by its loudest messenger. It is currently the argument of the man from Tiffany's and Freddic Mac spending the money of a Las Vegas billionaire in a personal vendetta against Romney. Sure, we'll all watch the attack video this week. Then Romney will roll out a defense of capitalism and managerial governance he thought he would have until the fall to unveil. He'll package it in patriotic symbolism and back it with Iowa and New Hampshire. And that will be that until the White House deploys its version of the critique.
3. Ron Paul is, for the short-term future, the most interesting person in American politics. He, alone besides Romney, is a proven vote-getter this year. He, alone besides Romney, has a campaign able to last beyond January. What will he say next, in public and in negotiations with Romney? What does he set as the price for his endorsement?
4. Expect the "What does Ron Paul want" and "Who will Romney select as his running mate" stories and discussions to start very, very soon. Maybe today.
